lastminute.com London Eye – The Icon of London's Skyline

The lastminute.com London Eye is one of the most famous and visited landmarks in London and is considered one of the most spectacular observation platforms in the world. The impressive Ferris wheel on the south bank of the Thames, near Westminster Bridge, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the British capital. Standing at a height of 135 meters, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe for a long time and remains one of London's most impressive attractions to this day.

Since its opening, the London Eye has become a symbol of modernity and innovation in London. It attracts millions of visitors every year and provides an unforgettable perspective on the city's iconic landmarks.

The History and Creation of the London Eye
The idea for the London Eye was conceived in the 1990s when the British government announced a competition to design a new landmark for the millennium. The architect couple David Marks and Julia Barfield then designed the concept of a giant Ferris wheel that would provide a 360-degree view of London.

Construction began in 1998, and the Ferris wheel was manufactured in several large parts on land before being mounted on a floating platform in the river. The London Eye was officially opened on December 31, 1999, but the official operation was delayed until March 2000.

Although originally planned as a temporary attraction for five years, the London Eye was kept due to its immense popularity and is now one of the city's key attractions.

Architecture and Technological Features
The London Eye is a technical masterpiece of modern engineering.

# 1. Size and Construction
- Standing at a height of 135 meters, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe for a long time and remains one of the tallest in the world.
- The entire structure weighs approximately 1,700 tons and is held up by tension cables and supports, giving it the appearance of a giant bicycle.
- Unlike traditional Ferris wheels, the London Eye is constructed as a "cantilever wheel," attached only on one side – an impressive technical feat.

# 2. The Pods – An Extraordinary View
- The London Eye has 32 oval, fully glazed pods that provide passengers with an unrestricted 360-degree view.
- Each pod can accommodate up to 25 people and is air-conditioned to provide visitors with a comfortable experience.
- The pods move at a slower pace than a normal walking speed, allowing guests ample time to enjoy the breathtaking view during the approximately 30-minute ride.
- The pods are designed to rotate during the ride to remain in a stable, horizontal position.

Spectacular Views – A Glimpse Over London
The London Eye offers an unparalleled view of the city's most famous landmarks. On a clear day, you can see up to 40 kilometers away.

# Landmarks visible from the London Eye:
- Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament – One of London's most iconic landmarks directly across from the London Eye.
- Buckingham Palace – The official residence of the British monarchs is easily visible from the air.
- The Shard – The tallest building in Britain towers above the skyline.
- St. Paul's Cathedral – The dome of the famous cathedral is easily recognizable.
- Tower Bridge and Tower of London – Historic landmarks that stretch along the Thames.
- Wembley Stadium – On clear days, the famous stadium is visible in the distance.

The ride is particularly impressive in the evening when the city lights of London illuminate and transform the skyline into a magical atmosphere.

Experiences and Special Attractions
The London Eye offers various experience options to make the visit even more unique.

- Standard Ride – The classic 30-minute loop in one of the glass pods with panoramic views.
- Private Pods – For special occasions like birthdays, proposals, or romantic evenings, an entire pod can be exclusively rented.
- Champagne Experience – Visitors can enjoy a glass of champagne during the ride and experience the view in a luxurious setting.
- Themed Events – Depending on the season, there are special events, such as festively decorated pods during Christmas or themed experiences for Valentine's Day and Halloween.

The London Eye as a Cultural Symbol
Since its opening, the London Eye has become a permanent fixture in the city and regularly appears in movies, TV shows, and advertising campaigns. It has been featured in blockbusters like "Harry Potter," "Sherlock Holmes," and "Doctor Who" and is often the setting for spectacular events.

Every year on New Year's Eve, the London Eye is the focal point of the grand fireworks display over the Thames, watched by millions of people live and on TV.

Importance for Tourism
With over three million visitors per year, the London Eye is one of the most visited attractions in Britain.

- It is a top sight for first-time visitors to London, offering a perfect way to get an overview of the city.
- It remains a popular experience for Londoners themselves, especially on special occasions.
- Its proximity to other famous landmarks like the South Bank, the Houses of Parliament, and the SEA LIFE London Aquarium makes the London Eye an ideal part of a day trip.

It's more beautiful from afar than up close inside. Because it goes very slowly and you barely realize that you are going up. It's a short time, and ideally everything should be good weather and clear because otherwise the views are not clear. Since it's all closed and through the glass. The views are beautiful, but because it's so slow, you don't enjoy or feel that sensation of height. The wait is quite long for so many people who want to go up. Recommended once.

Shocking price just for a ride on the Ferris wheel. Didn't buy a ticket. We preferred to go on a Thames River cruise (which was much cheaper).

It's worth visiting 5 hours in advance! If you go 20 minutes early, you can watch a breathtaking scene!!

It's a good experience to check off your bucket list, but probably wouldn't do it again. Warning!! The shop only accepts cards, which caused them to lose a young customer who wanted to spend her birthday money on a souvenir from her trip. However, she found the same thing for a cheaper price at a nearby stall, so if you prefer using cash like us, don't worry, there's a stall about 20 seconds away that accepts cash. I purchased fast track Flexi tickets in advance online and we got on immediately without any wait. The queue we skipped didn't seem too long, maybe a 30-minute wait, and we visited at noon on a Saturday. For those with good mobility, you can step on while it's moving, but it moves very slowly, so it's not an issue. They also stop it for anyone with mobility issues.

You don't have to come, this attraction is hard to find, priced at 1200 Taiwanese dollars, and it's necessary to visit the landmark! The entire cityscape of the landmark, it seems like coming to another world in general, the most shining one should be the Thames River view, to the top of the landmark's eye-catching... like on a cruise ship! It's really worth seeing the distinctive eyes of the landmark...
